St. Peter’s block in 1930

The Heritage Center in Fredericksburg has a number of Port Royal and St. Peter’s items in its expanding collection.

One interesting document is a map owned by Jim Patton depicting Port Royal in 1930 entitled "Measure Plan of Town of Port Royal". 1930 is written in . This is a block by block map.  This is handy for using in relationship to Selma Farmer’s late 1930’s pictures within Port Royal or just for seeing what was here 80 years ago.

This article just shows the block enclosing St Peter’s :

A couple of points to note:

1. In place of the lot next door there historic items no longer there designated by "site of". There was a kitchen and an "elaborate boxwood garden." Based on the scale it was not only elaborate but large.

2. There were far more sycamores that we have today. Elsewhere we have pictures of the one in front of the church. There were four on the side not counting "the great sycamore" at the back.  There was another large tree on the other side = 48′ Lin.

3. The vegetation is interesting with more variety of fruit trees. We have a pear tree but the map also notes a cherry, plum and peach.

4. Intead of the nursery (1960’s Ralph Fall building) there was a shed.

5. Interesting to see the "servants quarters".  That may have been the original outside kitchen. However at that position in the 1930’s pictures there was horse stall then went back to the early 20th century.

Other blocks will be covered in the future.
