Notes on the cemetery from Hidden Village Port Royal, Virginia 1744-1981 – Ralph E. Fall
May 6, 1878 – Vestry voted that is “inexpedient that the Church Yard should be used as a cemetery”. Rev Friend was the first buried here in 1870. Before long, other people began to be buried here.
1886– Resolution adopted by Vestry whereby the northwest side of the year was laid off in sections 20 feet by 24 feet and sold for $75 to Church members for interment of their families. Resolutions amended to include members of other churches to obtain cemetery lots.
1938 – Vestry voted to permit graves on SE side but “the area was disapproved for that purpose.”
1946 – Vestry authorized extension of the graveyard from bell tower to the top edge of the Riverbank.
1975 – Congregation approved 11 bylaws on the church cemetery. It is “not a public burial ground but is the exclusive property of St. Peter’s Church”. Cost of new grave space 10 feet x 4 feet was fixed at $100 and grave-markers were not to exceed four feet above the ground
