Come to an 1898 Wedding

June is a wedding month so embedded in a folder of Jim Patton’s St. Peter’s files called "membership" was this 1898 wedding which occurred during Rev. Ware’s time and has some wonderful descriptions: 

 

 

 

 

  Who are these people ?  

1. Sarah Jane Peyton (1830-1907) organist of St. Peters 28 years. She was at her home at Lot 34 (Brokenbrough Peyton home) when Willie Jett and 4 others including John Wilkes Booth rode up to her home. April 23, 1865. Since there were no men in the house that day she sent them on. She is also owned Lot 35 until she died. 

Henrietta Pendleton Taylor (1840-1919) widow of George Taylor of Horn Quarter King George County lived on Lot 18 Harris House until death in 1919. Her daughter Sallie Penn Taylor 1870-1961 married Augustine Fitzhugh Turner (1875-1966) in this 1898 wedding and owned Lot 18 in 1909 where they lived 25 years before moving to Fredericksburg. They had two children – Anne Pendleton (1900-1991), Taylor Fitzhugh (1903-1991)

3. Augustine Fitzhugh Turner ( son of Mr. and Mrs. George Turner). Vestryman of St. Peter’s. Bank director of Port Royal Bank before it merged Union Bank. He was a farmer as listed in 1910. He also had an office on Lot . 26. Rev. Poindexter taught him swim in Rappahannock. Authorized purchaseof iron fence for St. Peter’s in 1902

4. William Turner Pratt (1869-1948) –purchased 237 acre tract and Townsfield 1900 for $4K! He was treasurer at St. Peter’s for several years after the 1909 death of John Tayloe Thornton. He offered to furnish the electric equipment to light the church and Vestry to pay wiring around 1920. He was a farmer who also operated a garage in Port Royal. He also lived in Fredericksburg by 1920 and worked in real estate

5. Miss Mary Cary Bowen (1879-1964) – Born in Tazewell, Virginia, USA on 18 Apr 1879 to Private Bowen and Lucy Gravatt. She married George Turner of Walsingham of King George. Walsingham consumer by fire in 1892 and family moved to Lot 34 with Sarah Jane Peyton

6. Mr. George Turner , Jr. 1873-1950. 3 children Miss Jaquelin Fitzhugh Turner, Augustine Bowen Turner (1902-1903), Rees Bowen Turner. George, Mary, and Augustine Bowen are buried St. Peters

7. Rev. John McNabb of Port Conway. 1890 St. Paul’s King George rector

8. Rev. S. S. Ware  – Rector of St. Peter’s 1888-1918
