Ladies Night Out for the 12th year was celebrated at St. Peter’s. The date of the event 3/14/2015 was know as "Pi" day since the mathematical concept of pie starts with those numbers. Don’t wait around for it again – won’t happen for another century. Ladies Night Out began as a social event and has become a fundraiser.  The main point is that the men cook for the ladies and allow them to go first in the line.

We had 26 people on a lovely night where the rain had stopped and the sun was peaking through at 6pm at the beginning of the event. The Hors d’oeuvre part before the main dinner went on a little longer as people enjoyed chicken wings, ham biscuits, salmon and crackers and drinks combined with socializing.  There was an Irish theme with St. Patrick’s day on the 17th. There was a St. Patrick’s table cloth, napkins and othe decorations for the day. One person came in with a leprechaun hat.

The dinner had an enormous amount of food – Johnny’s venison, Stanley’s meatloaf, Dave’s fish (cooked on site), Joe’s pot of vegetables, Alex’s kale and salmon, Ken’s terriyaki chicken plus remains of the earlier course and rice and a spicy corn pudding. There were 3 pies for pi day – cherry, apple and blackberry that were extremely tasty – hats off to Paul Glancey at Paul’s bakery for contributing those. Another male.

The game afterwards was less of a game with a question/answer session on the Lincoln assassination since the 150th anniversary event will be marked this year in the last weekend in April in Port Royal and Bowling Green. Jim Heimbach and John Sellers contributed this part of the program with Jim asking the questions, people answering them and John interpreting some of the events.  John also contributed the dinner prayer this year.

After hearing the questions and answers one realizes that 3 of those involved – Willie Jett, Henry Rathbone and John Surratt went mad after the event. Events are still disputed to this day, such as where did Booth really land in Port Royal after coming across the Rappahannock on Monday, April 24.

If it had been a day earlier and St. Peter’s had been holding services we may have been involved in the events. St. Peter’s through its parishioners was involved – Sarah Jane Peyton (whom Booth called on in King Street) and Charles Urquhart (who examined Booth’s body). The tragedy is both a loss of life and that Booth was misled by his own thinking that he would be welcome in Virginia as a hero and liberator.
