As Bill Wick writes " This is the eleventh consecutive year the Men have sponsored this event, and we have raise over $6,000 for the Vestry to use addressing various church needs."
Bill and Fred unfortunately were not able to attend due to recent medical problems. We had at least two couples on vacation but we still had 28-30 for a night of wonderful food and generous laughter.
As usual the Men "cooked" for the Ladies and it was outstanding. Johnny’s venison , Dave’s catfish, Ken’s chicken dish, Barbara’s macaroni, Eunice’s deviled eggs, Mary Ann’s sangria, Steve’s pork sliders (Catherine and Ben’s son-in-law) and many others, including a blueberry cobbler (Johnny) at the end. There were plenty of vegetables – brocoli, corn pudding, and spoonbread.
The entertainment was a game of "Jeopardy" between the men and women, a game show originally created by Merv Griffin and which graced the air waves from 1964-1975.
Jeopardy was led by Joe and Boyd with the former acting as judge and having to issue opinions and eliminating questions after he gave the answer to one of them! Categories were Caroline County, Civil War, Genesis, 10 commendments, and St. Peter’s.
The men did well on the Civil War as the women did so on the 10 commandments and St. Peter’s (history). Both sides struggled over questions such as the top oldest homes in Port Royal and the rivers of Eden.
The "judge" had to intervene frequently over the answers. "It’s not written this way on the paper." In particular the punishment of Adam and Eve after the apple was eaten draw ire from the men. The women named most of them and were awarded points.
The women were leading for most of the night but lost it on the Final Jeopardy question. The men bet all and the ladies just enough to counter the men with the question – "What was Stonewall Jackson’s horse name and where is he today ?"
The men answered it correctly – "Little Sorrell" and "VMI." The men celebrated but the women were consoled that they had answered most of the Bible questions correctly.
