In their new book, The Food and Feasts of Jesus: Inside the World of First-Century Fare, with Menus and Recipes, Douglas E. Neel and Joel A. Pugh remind us that history is important because it shows us who we are. Learning about the time in which Jesus lived, what his culture was like, and what he ate can deepen our understanding of how Jesus was. Jesus observed the Sabbath, and would have eaten Sabbath meals with his followers. Scripture tells us that Jesus attended banquets and wedding feasts. As an observant Jew, Jesus would have participated in harvest feasts and todah feasts too.

On each of the Thursday evenings of Lent, we will talk about the particular feast and its place in first century Palestinian culture as we eat food that would have been typically served at such a feast. We’ll also participate in some of the customs of the times. By coming together for these little feasts during Lent, we’ll prepare physically and spiritually for the great Paschal feast of Easter, when we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior.
