Port Royal : Block By Block – Part 10, Block of Middle Frederick, Cumberland, Market

This is part of a series examining Port Royal "block by block" based on a map owned by Jim Patton from 1930. See here for the background. 


 

The block is three blocks away from St. Peter’s. It is bordered by Middle, Frederick, Cumberland and Market. It encompasses lots 45,44,51,52 .  

Lot 45

Ownership goes back to 1779. In 1913 Howell Jeter and wife Martha held title and at the time of Fall’s book and in 1982 daughter Ruth Jeter Cadden. Cadden motor court was erected by her and an Easter1965 open house was held with Rev. Fall offering the prayer.

Lot 44

William Bogle was an early owner in 1772 and as merchant and factor owned at last one ship for overseas trade. The lot was divided in 1810-1814 and from 1787-1850 parts owned by African Americans, including Micholas Bastian " a man of colour and John Bundy a "free negro" owned it 1825-1840. His widow owned it in 1850.  

A portion of the property was owned by Mary Virginia Tiffey, younger sister of Anna Tiffey who married Rev. William Friend. Colin Catlett owned it in 1850 and married Ellen Rowe Thornton and has 6 children – George William Catlett (1841-1910, Anna Gordon (“Nannie”) Catlett (c. 1844-1924), Lucy Buckner Catlett (born c. 1846, Harriet Thornton Catlett (born c. 1848, Robert Maurice Catlett (born c. 1851). Alice G. Catlett (born c. 1854), unmarried. Catlett’s died in 1856.  

Two owners later the Rollins family bought it and were living there in 1880. Part of the lot was sold to Wiliam Young, negro and continued own it until 1909. Rollins sold his remaining portion in 1883 to Robert A. Carter, then John Tayloe Thornton,  then 1900 Molly Jeter and  Howell Jeter of Lot 44.

Lot 51

Robert Gilchrist was the first owner. Watts Parker a quarantine officer and also a tanner and shoemaker. Home was on Lot 52 and his stable on adjoining Lot 51 on Cumberland St. In 1805 Parker insured his stable 30 feet by 16 feet on Lot 51, for $200. Fall writes “the stable disappeared long ago.” (There is no mention on the 1930’s map). The family occupied it in 1816. Ownership is unclear until Thornton Bradley owned in 1876. Eddie Gouldin & wife Elizabeth Gouldin erected a small bungalow and live here on Frederick St

Lot 52

Earliest owners: Robert Gilchrist, succeeded by Watts Parker of Lot 51. his dwelling one story frame, 50 feet by 22 feet, for $1,000, and his kitchen 24 feet by 16 feet for $100, both on Lot 52 as was another frame structure, uninsured. 

Parker’s heirs were his three daughters who succeeded as owners-occupants of Lots 51-52: Nancy Parker (1816), and Nancy (or Ann), Lucy, & Mary Parker (1823). In 1866 Lucy & Mary Parker owned-occupied Lot 52 inherited from Nancy Parker; in 1867 they placed no value on their property which had been damaged by fire.  The 1930’s map shows only the site of this home.

Thornton Bradley owned Lot 52 in 1875 (also owned Lot 51). Heirs of William B. Quesenberry owned Lot 52 in 1903; because of delinquent taxes, in 1903 James E. Walker purchased Lot 52 at public auction. Last to live in a portion of the old Parker house on Lot 52 were the tenants, Dewey Jordan & wife Letitia (Hall) Jordan who had seven children. After Jordan’s death (1970) & Mrs. Jordan’s death (1975) the one-story cottage was demolished. The present mobile-home here is owned-occupied by Mrs. Dorothea (Morton) Crawford.
