Overpaint at bottom
-background was originally
a pale, bright cerulean blue.
It was first overpainted by a rose-color, then a
pale orange-ochre color, and finally with the
dark maroon. The rose color was directly on top
of the blue and was somewhat resistant to the
solvent, thus it is possible that this layer should
be retained.
Test cleanings done at the lower curve of the
S
revealed that the letters were originally mordant gilt
with gold leaf or powder over a thin warm brown
ground. The letters had a thick black bevel to make
them look raised from the wall and were outlined with
a narrow white line of paint.
The right image is a test cleaning in the background,
lower right edge on the central panel.
